摘要
Based on a case study in the West District of Beijing, this paper examines some problems that emerge withurbanization and land use policy. It illustrates the continuous tension between urbanization, commercialization, realty development and housing development in the West District. This process is constituted in the socio--economic context of the city. The paper suggests that realty development in the downtown area must be under rational guidance of the municipal government and that the standards of the housing should meet the varied needsof local residents rather than catering for the specific needs of a wealthy minority.
