Sarah Ome Jewett, one of the famous American women writers in the late 19th century, discusses the theme of constructing a harmonious environment in which human beings and nature could coexist in her short story A White Heron. In the story, Jewett presents how the heroine Sylvia withstood the tests of substance and friendness and finally protected the rare white heron. The story not only eulogizes the harmonius relationship between human beings and nature but also accuses human＇ s bad behaviours of killing animals and destorying natural environment during the history of social development. Here Jewett shows evidently her concern about ecology and her greenness concern about the relationship between human be- ings and nature. A White Heron not only presents the social reality of the late 19th century, but also enlightens the readers in the advanced modern society.
