Results from the 1984 multildiscipline survey of the western Taiwan Strait and those from historical data all indicate that in summer hydrographic features of the channel west of Taiwan Shoals is mainly controlled by the South China Sea Shelf Water, the East Guangdong Upwelling Water, and the upwelling water off the south Fujian coast. The South China Sea Shelf Water is normally located in the upper layers of the southern channel with the East Guangdong Upwelling Water beneath it and the South FuJian Upwelling Water is situated in the northern channel. These three water masses meet near around the bridge land between the coastal island Dongshan to Taiwan shoals. The name South Fujian Coastal Upwelling is used here to identify the upwelling phenonena off the south Fujian coast (northwest of the Taiwan Shoals) which shows clear difference from the East Guangdong Coastal Upwelling both in its physical and chemical natures of the upweiled water and in its temopral and spaeial variations. It is suggested that the South Fujian Coastal Upwelling may come from the channel east of the Taiwan Shoals. It is further speculated that in summer the Taiwan Warm Current mainly originates from the area east of the Taiwan Shoals.
