Adult Wistar rats were inflicted with 6 Gy total body irradiation and 30% TBSA full thickness burns on the back. It was found that after combined radiation-burn injury , the content of free calcium ions and the basic and sodium-dependent rate of calcium release were increased and the calcium uptake rate decreased. This disturbance was partially prevented with the administration of fluid replacement and verapamil , a calcium channel antagonist, especially when verapamil was used before the injury was inflicted. Verapamil is able to amliorate the abnormal increase of the mitochondrial calcium level and partially correct the abnormal calcium transport.
