The Art of Tibetan Religious Masks Tibetan religious masks are divided into Tiao Shen (sorcere's dance in a trance)masks and hanging masks. The former are used by dance performers in various religious ceremonial activities while the latter are used to hang.in monasteries to safeguard Buddha dharma and for massive worshipers to pay homage to.Both that function cross-correlatively originated from the religious sense of rewarding gods and ghosts to ward off ill luck and calamity and safeguarding Buddha dharma. The masks manifest various images of 3 categories:1.Buddha figures,Bodhisattva, heavenly god, arhat, eminent monks and their angry expressions in safeguarding Buddha power;2.the native religion of Tibet. Some monsters and spirits who gained supernatural power after converted to Buddhas and became deities of safeguarding Buddha dharma;3.divinities manifested in the foreign culture absorbed from outside world,e.g.,the god of longevity, junior and senior monks from Han nationality culture, heavenly god, fairy maiden and Brahman deities from Indian fairy legends.
