An acoustic suspended monitor (ASSM) has been developed for the observation of suspended sediment concentration profiler in water, monitoring pollutants in water and for the studies of coastal sediment transportation and deposition. The determination of the main technical parameters and the methodology of resolving the keytechniques and laboraftory calibration are reviewed. The ASSM was applied to observe the suspended sediment in theChangjiang Estuary, whose typical suspended sediment concentration profilers have been obtained.
