Language Awareness and Critical Language Awareness:Rethinking of Foreign Language Teaching

摘要 受主流语言学影响,目前国内外语教学仍以语言形式为主。交际法产生以来,“语言能力”与“交际能力”的培养在外语教学中相得益彰。然而交际法和语用学等学科内容在外语教学中的应用并没有使语言教学彻底脱离“规约”的旧巢。究其原因是对语言本质认识论上产生的误区。语言仍被认为是一种固定的语码,其能指和所指关系是一种相互对应的规约,没有认识到语言内在的社会思想本质。本文倡导语言教学应树立学生的批评语言意识,提高运用、解读语言材料的能力。 Under the impact of the Western mainstream linguistics, foreign language teaching in China has long focused upon linguistic forms. The introduction of Communicative Approach and application of the findings in pragmatics and other areas of linguistics have resulted in a coterminous development of the students' linguistic competence and communicative competence. In spite of this improvement, language teaching is still entangled in the web of normative teaching. Underlying all this is the epistemological misinterpretation of the very nature of language. Considered to be a fixed code with the co-referential relationship between the signifier and signified, language is stripped of its inherent social and ideological import. This paper advocates the fostering of the critical linguistic awareness among the students so as to improve their ability in the linguistic production and interpretation.
