Invisible Man, African American novelist Ralph Ellison' s masterpiece, is a novel full of carnivalesque spirit, which is carried out by crowns, madmen and tricksters in the novel. Flexible tricksters are masqueraded. Clowns are closely related with rituals of crowning and decrowning. Madmen, hiding themselves under the mad masks, are the most sober men in the novel. These so - called abnormal people help explain the theme of the novel and expose the truth about life. So they are the touchstone of the reality, of these classes and organizations with which they are in touch .
