张爱玲在其《倾城之恋》中营造了四个主要意象:胡琴意象、白公馆意象、月亮意象、墙的意象。这些意象深刻地传达了人生的苍凉意味,具有营造苍凉氛围、构建对应结构等审美功能。
The women in Mrs.Gaskell's novels are different from the traditional women in Victorian literature.They subvert the traditional role of women as 'angels in the house'.They are usually ignored deliberately by Victorian society.Self-supported as they are,they are submitted to the patriarchy and can not really achieve self-protection and self-realization.Gaskell depicts readers the women's living circumstances in an industrial society of the 19th century.
