Guided by Orlando Patterson' s definition of ethnicity, this article investigates the composition of Hakka ethnic identity in Kolkata. The author believes that three elements are important in establishing and maintaining Hakka identity insofar as the Kolkata Hakka are concerned, including state and national politics, an ethnically differentiated and stratified economy, and a host society with a religious system based on the symbolic opposition of purity and impurity. A number of elements are crucial in maintaining ethnic identity, such as caste, ethnicity, language and religion. Ethnic identity, however, would be changed in accordance with the changes of environment and scenario. Given the politics, very dissimilar trajectories for extremely different realities of employment, education and Hakka identity could be expected.
