Chinese American literary masterpiece China Men won critical acclaim soon after its publication in 1980. Its author, Maxine Hong Kingston, even regarded it as higher in quality than her sensational Woman Warrior. In an attempt to rectify past deficiencies in the work's various interpretations in China, this paper intends to employ New Historicism in order to explain why China Men enjoys such a reputation as it does by focusing on the multiple interplays between historical facts and their textual (including photographical) representation. It is further believed that only by means of using such a critical approach can we best put this important work in the most appropriate perspective and establish its proper position in modern American literature.
