The long narrative poem "The Schooner Flight" is Nobel Laureate Derek Walcott's self-portrait and life-summary, of which Shabine, the narrator-protagonist, or the black and white sailor-poet, allegorizes Mrican Caribbean suffering from European colonialism and slavery and conveys the mental agony of the colored Caribbean and the obstacles that they are facing while searching for their own language, history and cultural identity. By way of the strategies of hybrid, appropriation and mimicry, Walcott borrows largely from the discourse and verbal modes of the traditional Western literal icons to reconstruct history and cultural identity through his post-colonial expressive art in the hope of subverting colonial power and healing national trauma.
