Once setting foot on the continent of North America, African Negroes have embarked on their long journey of looking for self and pursuing identity. The Confessions of Nat Turner by William Styron represents the journey of hardships Nat Turner, the black protagonist, traversed in pursuing his cultural identity. Nat Turner begins his journey with the construction of his personal identity by identifying with the mainstream white culture, then he attempts to construct his political identity by returning to some sacred homeland in search of an original, shared cultural identity of African Negroes. With the efforts in establishing these two identities failed, Nat Turner finally reconstructs a cultural identity of African Negroes as diaspora featuring heterogeneity.
