Translation is a particular type of discourse which has always co-existed with power. The process of translation is in any case a process of contest for discourse power between SL and TL, whose result makes a significant impact on the growth of national language. This paper applies Nietzsehe' s power concept and Foucault' s discourse theory into the discussion of the relationship between power, discourse and translation. It reviews the history of translation as a power game rather than a traditional faithful transfer of meaning, explicates respectively the distinctions of translational discourse in the three phases of Western cultural developments, and illustrates the roles in translation played by beth interior and exterior systems which control discourse power.
