Katherine Mansfield expresses in a great number of short stories her deep sympathy for those female characters who suffer both physically and psychologically. Miss Brill is one of her representative works. The title character Miss Brill, living alone in a foreign country, has been longing for a close relationship with the society; however, her attempts eventually end in failure because of the inhumanity on the part of two young lovers. This paper, from the perspective of Henry Tajfel's social identity theory, aims at analyzing Miss Brill's psychological change from an observer of society to a participant in society and finally to one who is abandoned by society.
