When Shakespeare's plays come into the horizon of Chinese readers and audiences, their tex-tual significance can not escape reconfignration through the lens of Chinese culture. In Timon of Athens, the motifs of “betrayal” and “temptation” reflect “trustworthiness” in Confucianism; in the Merchant of Venice, the Christian doctrines of “love” and “mercy” are rough equivalents of “benevolence” in Confucianism; in As You Like It, the ethical theme of “forgiveness” corresponds to the concept of “harmony”, an ideal relationship between man and nature in Taoism and the ultimate aim of music in Confucianism. The convergence of ideas stems from the inherent unity of Confucianism and Taoism in Chinese philosophy with the Bible in the western countries.
