The essay intends to interpret Jane Eyre' s departure from Thornfield and return to Rochester from a feminist perspective. Her departure arises from her unwillingness to become an Other that is economically dependent on the opposite sex and is her striving for feminist freedom and independent identity. Her return to Rochester, however, does not point to a failed endearour, but is endowed with further connotations: it is the consolidation of her feminist freedom and independent identity and the sublimation of her feminist thought, which boosts further development of feminism.
