Jauss's "horizon of expectations" reveals that translators should take readers' horizon of expectation into consideration in order to achieve readers' acceptability of their translations. Due to readers' particular horizon of expectations in late Qing Dynasty, when translating Uncle Tom' s Cabin into The Black Slave Appeals to Heaven, Lin Shu, by means of narration, abridgment, deletion and adaptation, omitted some Christian ideas and anti-slavery political views in the original version, and highlighted his readers' awareness of the national calamity and crisis, their patriotic spirit and the Chinese traditional morality, such as the filial piety, loyalty, etc. , in his translated version. Thus, Lin Shu' s translation stimulated readers' enthusiasm and has been successfully fused with readers' horizon of expectations.
