In Delft, the Netherlands in the 1650's, Ming Dynasty blue and white porcelain was successfully imitated. Later, Delft grew out of the imitation production of export porcelain from China and began to develop its own design in Chinese style. At the same time, under the influence of Delftware, blue and white chinoiserie pottery was mass produced in ceramic plants across Europe. Henceforth, Chinoiserie became a trend in ceramic design. This paper examines the classic examples of Delftware to grasp the development of chinoiserie design in Europe in the 17-18th century.
