The strengthening mechanism of WC Co cemented carbides by cryogenic treatment was studied. The experiment results showed that, cryogenic cooling in liquid nitrogen for 10~100h can obviously raise the macro compressive stress on alloy surface resulting in strengthening WC Co alloy to some extent. Altering the stress state between WC phase and γ phase and inducing martensitic transformation of γ phase by cryogenic cooling are all related to the restraint role of WC skeleton to γ phase. So the more the Co content in alloy, the less the effect of cryogenic cooling is.
