The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal was first built in the 5th century BC and passed into oblivion in the Late Qing Dynasty, which has served as a major south-north transport artery in China. It is a tough way to maintain navigation waterways. The Grand Canal was full of frustrations and moved towards decline eventually. The decay of the ill-fated Canal may be due to the three primary reasons: the geographical environment critically hinders the development of the Canal;the fundamental purpose of the feudal government, which is Yellow River Control and Assuring Water-transportation,brought about management impropriety of The Grand Canal;corruption of the Administration of River Conservancy caused the Canal to fall into a decline;the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Movement accelerated the collapse of the system of canals.
