2,4,4,5,5-Pentaphenyl 1,3,2-dioxaphospholane may be generated by treating benzpinaeol with (d.iehloro)phenylphosphine. The phospholane contains a strained carbon-carbon bond which undergoes thermally-induced homolysis at 70℃ to generate a diradical capable of initiating styrene polymerization. The polymer generated from decomposition of the phospholane in the presence of styrene monomer contains phospholane in the mainchain. This polymer exhibits thermal stability comparable to that of conventional polystyrene but decreased flammability.
