当代美国著名的黑人剧作家奥古斯特.威尔逊非常关注以非洲为中心的美国黑人文化传统在文学创作中的运用。他的文学创作借助布鲁斯音乐、社会仪式和口头叙事等非洲中心黑人文化传统艺术性地展现了当代美国黑人的苦难历史与现状,而其剧中人物象征性地运用这几种文化传统完成了对其个人和种族身份的构建,保证了美国黑人种族及其文化传统的生存延续。
August Wilson is the most famous contemporary African American playwright who shows great concern over the use of the Afrocentric black cultural traditions in literary creation.His plays make use of such Afrocentric black cultural traditions as blues,rituals and oral narratives to show the bitter history and the present condition of the black in the U.S.The characters in his plays exploit these cultural traditions in a symbolic way to construct their own and their race's identities,and thus guarantee the existence and development of the black race and its culture.
