Pope' s mock-heroic poem The Rape of the Lock is widely accepted because it parodies the ancient heroic epics in its depiction of a very small thing which occurred in the upper-class society in London then, in order to achieve an ironic effect and the double purposes of entertainment and instruction. By parodying the overall traits of heroic epics, The Rape of the Lock involves the author' s thoughts and associations of morality. This not only shows the author' s superb poetic skill, but also reveals some degenerated viewpoints on human life and morality in the complicated social relationships, especially that between men and women.
