As is well known, diabetes is becoming a significant burden for public health in China. Diabetes mellitus has become an epidemic in recent years in China. Studies indicate that the prevalence of diabetes has increased rapidly in many different areas of China. Type 2 diabetes mellitus is associated with a high rate of complications, including cardiovascular disease and diabetic nephropathy, retinopathy and neuropathy. The rate of death among patients with type 2 diabetes is approximately twice as high as that among persons without the disorder.
