2008年2月，上海歌剧院带着自己的两部大戏——经典歌剧《奥赛罗》和原创歌剧《雷雨》，应邀赴北京新开幕的国家大剧院演出，向北京及世界的观众展示了上海歌剧院演出和创作歌剧的高度水平，受到广泛的关注和一致的好评。演出结束后，上海歌剧院院长、艺术总监张国勇邀请在京的专家，就原创歌剧《雷雨》召开了一次研讨会。
February 2008, Shanghai Opera House took its own two opera productions： the classic Verdi＇s Otello and modern opera Thunderstorm to Beijing＇s National Centre for the Performing Arts. Audiences there enjoyed not only splendid performances but they also witnessed Chinese creativity. Both productions received critical acclaim. After the performances, Shanghai Opera House＇s President Zhang Guoyong convened experts in Beijing to discuss Thunderstorm. At the meeting, experts all agreed that Thunderstorm was a moving opera. It is the right path for the nese opera. development of Chinese opera.
