Recent Chinese cinematic adaptations of Hamlet and Thunderstorm can be seen as celebrations of desire, in which cynicism has replaced humanistic concerns leading to a simple ethical vision of revenge. The hedonism of these blockbusters, which sabotage traditional values of their originals, testifies not only to the rampancy of desire on screen but also to overwhelming consumerism off screen. The essay sounds a warning against the trend as is witnessed in these blockbuster adaptations of drama classics to have recourse to sensationalism in a bid to fend off the play of wisdom.
