Though the relation between religion, desire and art is quite complex, John Donne, forefather of English Metaphysical poetry, explores it well in his secular love poems and divine poems to show his unique thinking on morality. In secular love poems, spiritual love and sexual love are both evaluated, and the union of body and soul is what Donne advocates for secular love morality. In divine poems, he deconstructs while expressing the sense of guilt, and thus making the skeptical spirit a must for the pursuit of truth rather than a crime. His thinking represents a kind of humane morality, and peculiar reasoning about religion, desire and art, which developed as well as deviated from his times. It can be of significance to today's literary creation and to reconsideration about the relation between religion and art as well.
