Chu Shi, one of the titles of recluses in ancient China, refers to those who stay home, never holding official posts. With the development of recluse culture, the concept of Chu Shi is understood differently. An investigation into the title of Chu Shi in Tang Dynasty indicates the complexity of Tang civil service system and generality of the title of Chu Shi as well as change of Tang people's values.
