In this paper a critical review is presented for preparation microstructure and emission mechanism of porous silicon (PS).Among the various techniques employed to obtain PS, the emphasis is givenn on the hydrothermal erosion we recently invented. The microstructure was studied by STM,HREM,XRD and SAXS,which shows that there exists orderly dispersed silicon quantum dots covered by silicon oxide in PS.The three dimensional quantum confinement in silicon nanocrystallites (<3nm)was suggested to be related to the blue emission observed in PS.
