摘要
现有各类新闻史著对有关《循环日报》编辑与发行情况的记述多有疏漏。经笔者考证,《循环日报》编辑人员主要由"主笔"(分"正主笔"和一般主笔)、"总司理"和"译员"等三部分人员组成。《循环日报》自创刊日起,除在香港及附近地区出版日刊版的"日报"外,还一度在海外华人聚居地区发行日报的周刊缩编本。《循环日报》发行地区主要分布于香港及周边地区,同时中国内陆各主要通商口岸及日本、澳大利亚、东南亚、南北美洲等华人聚居地区也有数量不等的发售。创刊初期的《循环日报》发行量不超过800份。1879年后,发行量增加到1100份左右,最多时达到2500份。为了扩大发行,《循环日报》在创办初期还采取免费赠送、广告招徕、刊登广告优惠、面向社会积极征稿等诸多方式,这在一定程度上增加了《循环日报》的影响。
The available news history works have more or less omissions concerning the edition and issue of Circle Daily. According to the author＇s investigation, the editors of Circle Daily include chief commentator, department head and translator. Circle Daily is consist of two parts, the daily newspaper and the weekly newspaper which are respectively issued in Hong Kong and overseas. With the largest circulation in Hong Kong and places nearby, Circle Daily covers a wide range of issues in mainland and treaty ports of China, Japanese, Australia, South Asia, America where Chinese are inhabited. In the initial stages of publication, its circulation was less than 800. After 1879, the number have jumped to 1100, and even 2500 at best, due to the measures it took, which enhances its influence.
