As a traditionally hematopoietic factor, Erythropoietin(EPO) has other important biologic effects besides hematogenesis. EPO can be induced by hypoxia and can express extensively in the nervous system; It exerts neuroprotection by affecting functions of neurons, glias, neural progenitor ceils and cerebrovascular endothelial cells. The discovery of the great neuroprotective potential of EPO has opened a new therapy for diseases in nervous systerm.
