Anthony Burgess' novel A Clockwork Orange is a focused representation of the problem of violence in Western society, with its influence so far-reaching that the term "clockwork orange" almost becomes an equivalent to violence. Why should Burgess, a Catholic in belief, devote his attention to the theme of violence in society? This paper attempts, mainly through three aspects of the loss of belief, the abuse of freewill and the secularization of religion, to look into the implied message and the author' s worries over the religious crisis that he believes to be the cause underlying the contemporary social problems.
