Edith Wharton wrote about war in a way different from common male and female writers: she generally wrote from a position that was as close to the front line as she could get without actually stepping over them. In her war novels, this special way of writing war is realized through her portray of male protagonists who are not fit for the battlefield and delineation of the "middle area" between the front line and the home front. Wharton's delineation of the "middle area" provides us a special perspective to understand the Great War.
