Borna disease virus (BDV) is a neurotropic virus which can cause the infection of central nerves system in animals. In order to research the relationship between BDV and the human psychiatric disorders, the p23 fragment of BDV in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from 72 psychiatric patients and 40 healthy donors were examined by nested RT PCR. We found that the p23 RNA positive rate in schizophrenia (9.4%) is higher than in donors (7.5%) but without statistical significance. The positive rate in bipolar disorders (21.1%) is significantly higher than in donors ( P < 0.05). The result suggests the bipolar affective disorders may closely related to the infection of BDV.
