摘要
《嘉莉妹妹》中的男主人公赫斯特伍德曾经衣食无忧,最终却沦为乞丐,饥寒交迫,自杀而死。文章从他自身和社会两个方面分析了他的死因。他因失去理智而失去所有财产;他因受不了金钱的诱惑而丢了工作;逃到纽约的他在现实生活面前的无能为力,使他在屡屡碰壁后失去了活着的勇气。
Hurstwood, a hero in Sister Carrie had lived a rich successful life before he was desperate and commited suicide. His death is a tragedy of himself because he can＇t self - control his intuitive thirst for sex and money, resulting from which he loses his job. Then because he can＇t adapt himself to reality, he has to face every failure. His death is also a tragedy of the society in which he lives. Here, money determines everything and the poor are unbearably discriminated. Hurstwood, who has nothing left but an old weak body, can have no choice but to die.
