Hong Kong’s return is not only an important event in the history of China, but it also has great impacts on Hong Kong’s culture and social formation. On the basis of reading and reflecting on Hong Kong cinema, the paper examines how the 'Chinese Vein' shifts and develops in Hong Kong films, focusing on the changes in Hong Kong’s cultural imagination and the reconstruction of its identity that accompany the rapid economic growth and globalization in China's Mainland. The paper holds that the new direction for the 'Chinese vein' in Hong Kong cinema is to 'combine' the 'Hong Kong' identity with the 'Chinese'. Hence the key concept in delineating Hong Kong cinema since '97: 'the post-original'.
