Surrounded by mountains, Junggar Basin is one of the five great physiographical units in Northwest China. It is 700 km long from east to west and its greatest wideness is about 450 km from south to north, occupies an area of 1.8×105km2. The elevation of the most places in the basin is lower than 500 m a.s.l., the water surface of Ebinur Lake is only 189 m a.s.l., much lower than that of other basins in arid areas of Northwest China. This paper mainly discusses the formation and evolution of the arid environment of Junggar Basin since the late Cenozoic as well as the main features and developing tendency of modern arid environment. The conclusions are mainly as follows:(1) Junggar Basin is a large-scale piled sedimentary basin formed in late Paleozoic,Mesozoic and Cenozoic. Its evolution can be divided into three stages, i.e., the primal formation stage in Permian, unffied development stage in Mesozoic, and curtailed and formed stage in Cenozoic. (2) The arid environment of Junggar Basin is of long standing. It started from late Cretaceuous, from then on,the general some relatively humid periods appeared. As the whole Xinjiang, the environment of the basin was relative1y humid in Miocene, but arid in both Pliocene and Quaternary. Under the general tendency of arid envioronment since Quaternary, cold-dry and warm-humid periods frequently appeared alternately, and gladal and interglacial epoches occurred alternately.(3) At present, the whole basin is shll in an arid clAnatical environment, it undoubtedly accords with tlie global warming, and there is no indication of inverse change of the arid environment. The influence of human activities can not be ignored.
