Three experiments were conducted using orthographic decomposition tasks to explore whether foreign leamers can detect graphological errors in Chinese characters. There are two major results of the study. First, direction converse and component substitution cause much more confusion to foreign leamers than to native speakers, who, however, tend to make a mistake in the recognition of the right number of strokes in a character. Second, foreign leamers' ability to detect graphological errors in Chinese characters goes through the developmental process from being different from a native speaker' s ability to being similar to it. Results also show that the first one and a half years of learning in the critical period for a foreign student to develop the ability to detect graphological errors in Chinese characters.
