As the hero of The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner, Quentin Compson is left by the American Civil War. Being the successor of the old Southern tradition, he is indulged in its illusory history and legends. Meanwhile, he is coward and has no ability to change the reality. Under the attacks of tradition and innovation, he chooses the death to escape. Quentin's spiritual crisis reflects the mental perplexity and conflicts experienced by a group of southerners after the failure of the South in the Civil War. Such people can't really escape from the reality of the failure of the South and the innovation spiritually.
