摘要
Lakoff的隐喻理论是认知语言学理论的一个重要组成部分,是对传统隐喻观的彻底背离,因为其理论强调隐喻的本质是储存在我们大脑中的概念,而隐喻表达只是隐喻概念在语言层面的派生。虽然概念隐喻理论对语言学以及其他领域产生了重大影响,但是,只要仔细研究,仍能揭示该理论存在不少严重的问题。本文从经验基础、隐喻表达和概念隐喻、原始隐喻、隐喻理解等方面深入剖析Lakoff及其合作者的隐喻理论,旨在论证概念隐喻既没有存在的基础,也没有存在的必要。
Lakoff＇s theory of metaphor, one of the important theories integral to cognitive linguistics, represents a radical departure from the traditional view on metaphor in that it emphasizes that metaphors are essentially concepts stored in our brains and metaphorical expressions are only derivatively instantiations of metaphorical concepts at linguistic level. In spite of the fact that the theory of conceptual metaphors has exerted a strong influence on linguistics and other disciplines, a close study will bring to light quite a few serious problems with it. This paper argues that conceptual metaphors have no basis for their existence, nor is it necessary to propose them, by dissecting the theory of metaphor advanced by Lakoff and his collaborators with reference to such aspects as experiential basis, metaphorical expressions and conceptual metaphors, primary metaphors, and understanding of metaphorical expressions.
