Beloved, by Toni Morrison, exposes to a large extent the inhumane nature of slavery practiced in the United States in the 19th century. The selection of the names for the Afro-Americans in the book is one of the techniques the writer employed to uncover the life of the black people as "sub-humans" during that dark period. In fact, the names are the metaphors of their hope and their anti-slavery spirit.
