O' Neill's famous tragedy Desire Under the Elms, not like the traditional western dramas which lay stress on the characters' actions and external conflicts, focuses on the characters' inner conflicts. O'Neill creates three split souls whose inner world oscillates between ego, id, and superego. The inner conflicts make their dual personalities (Dionysus and Apollo) split and alienated and finally result in their tragic fate. While exploring the characters' complex souls, O'Neill is apparently influenced by Freud's psychoanalysis and Nietzsche's philosophy.
