In modem Chinese language, "He" ( 和 ) is only used as an ordinary noun or verb. However, firstly, in ancient China, it was used in a different way that the "和谐" ,which means "harmony" in English, was written as 龢龤" .It was related to Chinese musical instruments such as Sheng( 笙), a kind of wind instranent made of several bamboo tubes equipped with reeds and a blowpipe on a panshaped seat,as well as other bamboo tube instruments, and the ancient "Yuejiao" (乐教) ,a kind of political strategy to treat music as part of the contents of educating the people; secondly, starting with the Period of Spring and Autunan, scholars had made delicate distinctions between the two dualist concepts "He" and "Tong" (同). Actually, in the context of different philosophical schools named Zhuzi (诸子), the distinction indicated the totally converse academic directions of Confucianism and Taoism. To draw a conclusion from the above,"He" has rich connotation in both music terms and philosephica] domain. On one hand, it reflects the procedure of "Jijinyudao"(技进于道) by Chuang Tse(庄子), that is, people can get a certain philosophy from practical techniques, and put it into political practice, on the other hand,it also reflects the historical fact, pointed out by Liu Xin(刘歆) ,that all academic achievements came from governmental officials.
