摘要
亨利.奥古斯特.罗兰(Henry Augustus Rowland,1848—1901)是美国19世纪后半期最重要的物理学家之一,也是当时美国本土少数几位享有世界声望的科学家。他不但在物理学研究方面有过杰出的贡献,而且在培养新一代美国物理学家方面成绩显著,更重要的是,他继承并大力发扬了亨利所倡导的重视纯科学研究的观念,为美国基础物理学从边缘走向世界的中心起到了承上启下、继往开来的作用。
Henry Augustus Rowland(1848-1901) was one of the most important American physicists who won the great professional reputation over the world in the second half of 19th century.He contributed much to not only the research,but also the education of American physics.Moreover,he succeeded J.Henry's idea of pure science and carried it forward a great deal.He played an indelible role during the process that American physics study went from edge to center of the international learning.
