We are the first in China to study the application of emerging laser technology to bending of aluminum plated steel sheet metal.We used several sheet thicknesses:0.6,0.8,1,0,1.2,1.5mm. The experiments were conducted on imported laser cutting machine in a factory in Jinan, Shandong province.All the more important steps in our experiments could be done on this machine.The aluminum plated sheet metal could be bent into useful shapes by means of continuous TEM10 CO2 laser beam without hard dies and external forces. Our test conclusions were all presented in graphical form, but only Figs. 1 and 2 are given in this summary.Fig.1 shows that the bending angle tends to decrease with increasing diameter of laser pot provided that both laser power and scanning velocity remain unchanged.Fig.2 shows that the bending angle becomes smaller with increasing scanning velocity provided that laser power and pot diameter remain unchanged. There are three other conclusions(1)the bending angle of sheet metal is quasi -linearly related to the number of laser beam scannings;(2) in the research region,the bending angle is approximately inversely proportional to the sheet thickness;(3)at the same power density,the angle increases with decreasing scanning velocity.
