Hong Mai, the celebrated writer and scholar in the Southern Song Dynasty, was sent on a diplomatic mission to Jin Dynasty in the 32nd year of Shaoxing. After returning from Jin, he was immediately impeached and dismissed, for he failed to fulfill his mission. Therefore some notebook stories portrayed him as a diplomatic officer who was mortally afraid of death and surrendered the country's sovereignty rights under humiliating terms. And he was also uglified by poetry. But according to the reliable historical records of that time, Hong Mai behaved outstandingly and decently. His impeachment was mainly due to the fundamental change of the foreign policy after Emperor Xiaozong was enthroned. The reason why Hong Mai was dismissed is that Emperor Gaozong's policy of compromise and surrender was declined. Thus Hong Mai actually was the scapegoat of Emperor Gaozong.
