This paper tries to interpret the Chinese characters "Peng Peng Yuan Yuan" that commonly appear in the bronze inscriptions of the West Zhou dynasty. Judging from the form, sound of the characters, with consideration of the traditional critical interpretation and document meaning, the paper puts forward a brandnew opinion. Moreover, the paper compares the characters with its old pronunciation "Peng Peng Bo Bo" to see the similarities and differences. The paper points out that "Peng Peng Yuan Yuan" is an onomatopoeic term used to describe the sound of the bell and drum, which was later extended into the meaning of "grand". The paper also involves the textual research and interpretation of the bronze inscription" Tian Tian" which is related to "YuanYuan".
