Michael Porter put forward the theory about "stuck-inthe-middle" which means low cost advantage and differentiation advantage are not compatible. Some other strategists presented opposing evidence on "stuck-in-the-middle" and put forward the theory about integrated cost leadership/differentiation which means low cost advantage and differentiation advantage are compatible. These two kinds of theories are seemingly contradictory and can be demonstrable separately. Here, this paper calls the phenomenon "paradox of stuck-in-the-middle". The paper studies separately the hypotheses and their empirical evidences of these two kinds of theories, discusses the meaning, causes and management tactics of the paradox about "stuck-in-the-middle", and provides an elementary answer about the dilemma which puzzled competitive strategy researchers.
