This article discusses the history of the export of porcelain from China to Portugal during the Ming and Qing dynasties. In their discussion, the authors bring together information from Western archives and documents, the results of archaeological investigations, and export porcelain items in public and private collections, focusing on that related to Portugal. The essay points out that Guangdong decorated wares (Guangcai) were vital in the entire process of Sino-foreign trade and cultural interchange, and that Macao played a pivotal role in the transmission. The authors conclude by assessing the vital historical role and scientific value of export porcelain, centred on Portugal, as evidenced by the few examples that remain of the porcelain designed and commissioned by the Portuguese of the armorial porcelain known today in Chinese as wenzhangci.
